Moab Trip, March 2008

Slickrock, rock ledges, broken rocks, rock piles, canyons, fins, extreme downhills, insane uphills, stairsteps, sidehills – need I say more? It’s a four-wheelers paradise and whatever you’re looking to conquer, Moab has it.

Our trip to Moab began at Spanish Trails RV Park just south of town. After the park made sure no one camped next to each other, we planned our next few day’s trail runs. Actually, planning is not the word. We knew roughly 10 minutes before we left each day where we might be going.

On Monday, Steve met up with his usual Moab Gang and took off to run Behind The Rocks. This is a 7-rated trail that offers obstacles such as White Knuckle Hill, Upchuck Hill, and High Dive Canyon. Three Scorpions, an early Bronco, a Cherokee, and a Pinzgauer made for an eclectic group. The Pinzgauer kept everyone alert as they tried to keep the back end on the ground. As became the norm for this group, they returned after dark.

Tuesday saw us in Pritchett Canyon, an 8-rated trail offering Rocker Knocker, the Rock Pile, and Yellow Hill. Pritchett is a narrow, mostly uphill canyon with a lot of challenging obstacles. Except for a bent tie rod on Cody’s Cherokee at Rocker Knocker, we ran Pritchett Canyon without incident. Capturing a rare moment in time, many of us witnessed Steve’s Scorpion with tires grabbing for air on Yellow Hill.

Wednesday found our group splitting up to run different trails. Steve’s Moab Gang ran Rusty Nail, a non-Easter Jeep Safari trail, while the rest of us ran Poison Spider Mesa trail, a 5-rated trail. I snapped an outer front shaft early into the Poison Spider Trail, so I headed back to town for repairs. On Steve’s Rusty Nail run, Danny broke the yoke off his rear differential. In a true incident of planning ahead, he had a spare and a field fix kept them moving. As usual, they returned after dark.

Thursday found us running Hell’s Revenge, a 6-rated trail. This is one of the premier slickrock trails that features steep climbs, steep descents, and edge running not for the faint of heart. Our lunch spot, The Overlook, gave us a spectacular view of the Colorado River. We all ventured through Hell’s Gate, a well known descent and climb that keeps the heart rate high. After that, we played in Mickey’s Hot Tub, followed by a trip up The Escalator, and finally The Tip-Over Challenge.

Friday found us splitting up to do whatever – scenic trips, shopping, relaxing, sightseeing, or in Steve’s case, one more trail run to try to take it home broken.

By Saturday our group had either departed or was departing for the long drive home. Overall, it was a great trip, perfect weather, and a level of four-wheeling offered in few other places.
