Every year the San Diego 4 Wheelers sponsor their Superstition Mountain Run just northwest of El Centro. This was our third consecutive year in attendance and, as usual, we stayed at the nearby Rio Bend RV Resort. While it’s nice to have hook-ups and a cleaner campsite, we do miss the excitement of being at the event.
Following registration and safety check, we hit the trail to run Knock On Wood, a 4+ rated trail. Steve and Connor in the Scorpion headed off to run with some buggies on an “unofficial” run that promised carnage. Steve did have to respool his winch later that day in camp, so we know he had some fun.
After a brief dune run, we all passed the test of Locker Check Hill. If you couldn’t make this climb, seek out another run. Following a few rock gardens and some more dunes, we came upon Ed’s Hill, a spot that flopped Ed’s TJ the previous year. When all the winching was done on the lead vehicles, we got our shot and the Social Climbers all made it first try.
The Blue Angels put on quite a show for us throughout the day. At times they flew so low we could clearly see the pilot inside. Many times they flew level with the hill we were on.
With the run completed, we played on the dunes for a few hours and hooked up with Steve to finish off the day. Little to no wind and mid-60′s temperatures made for a perfect outing. Although we missed Sunday’s runs, we had a great time in camp, lunched at Camacho’s, and headed for home.
