The Superbowl of Jeeping, Feb 2010

On February 5 -7, 2010, the Social Climbers held their annual Superbowl of Jeeping run at Superstition Mountain. The Superstition Mountain OHV area is a 13,000 acre open area featuring sand dunes, mud hills, and rocks; just about any surface to wet your wheeling appetite. We stayed in the Ramada Area of the Rio Bend RV and Golf Resort in nearby El Centro. This is a great RV park and is only a brief 10 minute drive to the OHV entrance.

Bob, aka RUBICON, debuted his new rock buggy that he built over the last two years. It’s a great looking custom built rig with a distinctive purple and silver paint scheme. Unfortunately, it only stayed shiny, clean, and new for a short while…

The weather forecast predicted rain and the forecast was right. Saturday’s wheeling was sprinkled (pun intended) with off and on showers throughout the day. While this made traction in the sand hills better than usual, it didn’t take much to break through the surface crust to the sand below. We don’t get to play in the sand that often, so we spent a lot of time running the dunes. Steve blazed a new trail below Tower #1 and we all gave that a shot. Later, while blazing a new downhill, Tom slid sideways forcing his spotter, Ed, to jump for cover. Fun, huh? Some of the group explored a few rock trails that afternoon while others headed for camp.

For many of us that day, the trip back to camp was eventful. We typically don’t like mud, yet the rain had left the 7 mile dirt road into the OHV area a sea of it. Those of us in open rigs were drenched in mud by the time we hit the highway.

Sunday brought clear skies, some warmth, and a great day of wheeling. We mainly hit some of the designated trails such as Jaime’s Obstacle, Black Cat, and Tow Strap Hill. Glenn & Ed both got a little tipsy on a downhill near the Sand Dam. Steve bypassed a bypass and navigated a waterfall that got his attention. There are a lot of trails in this area; too many for a single weekend. We’ll hit some more next trip.

Yes, a fun trip, but the clean-up afterwards was horrible. There will always be mud from this trip in the Jeep somewhere.
